Setting Up Direct SMS Notifications

Monnit software (iMonnit) allows you to receive text message alerts when a sensor triggers a notification. One of the fastest and most reliable ways to receive these alerts is through Direct SMS.

Direct SMS delivers text notifications directly to your mobile device via Monnit’s dedicated SMS gateway, bypasses standard email-to-text latencies, and ensures you get critical alerts exactly when they happen.

This article will guide you through the quick and easy steps to set up Direct SMS notifications.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have the following:

Note: Direct SMS requires Notification Credits to deliver messages. If your account does not have credits, the messages will not be sent.

If you need help setting up your payment methods or buying credits, please refer to the following guides:

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Step 1: Add Your Phone Number to Your Account

  • Log in to your iMonnit account.
  • Navigate to Users: Click on Users in the main navigation menu.
  • Select a User: Choose the user you want to edit
  • Edit Notificaiton Details: Go to the Notifications tab (Bell Icon)
  • Choose Delivery Method: Toggle Delivery Method to Direct Delivery
  • Enter Phone Number: Type the mobile number into the Phone Number field, making sure to include the correct country code.
  • Save: Click the Save button.

Step 2: Create or Edit a Notification

Navigate to Rules (or Notifications) in the main menu. Click on an existing Rule you wish to edit, or click Create Rule to build a new trigger (e.g., Temperature greater than 80°F).

Step 3: Assign the Direct SMS Recipient

Click on the Tasks tab within the rule settings. Under the "Send a Notification" section, locate the user you verified in Step 2. Click the Text/SMS icon next to their name so it turns green/active. Click Save.

Testing Your Notification

To ensure everything is configured properly, we highly recommend triggering a test alert:

  1. Navigate to the Rules tab.
  2. Find the rule you just configured and click the Test icon (Mail icon with an arrow pointing out).
  3. Check your mobile device. You should receive a text message within a few moments.
  4. Check your Notification Credit balance to confirm that Notification Credits were deducted for the test.

Troubleshooting Quick Tips

  • Not receiving texts? Double-check that your phone number includes the proper country code (e.g., +1 for US/Canada) and that it has been successfully verified.
  • Texts stopped suddenly? Check your Notification Credits. If your Notification Credit balance hits 0, Direct SMS transmissions will immediately pause until a new credit pack is purchased.

As a backup, Monnit will send the SMS messages as emails to the Primary Contact if Notification Credits are spent.
