Temperature Probe Handling, Contamination, and ESD Sensitivity

The ALTA Standard Temperature, ALTA Low Temperature, and ALTA High Temperature sensors have Type 304 stainless steel thermistor (Standard Temp) or RTD (Low Temp and High Temp) probes. While stainless steel is generally resistant to corrosion or other contaminants, it is possible for contaminants and ESD (electrostatic discharge) to affect the operation of the sensor components.

Considerations

It is important to consider the sensitive nature of electronic components when handling such devices. It is advisable to avoid handling the probes with bare hands when it can be avoided. The act of handling the probe while it is uncovered can trigger issues with contamination or ESD leading to unexpected readings, battery drain, or unresponsive sensors in uncommon scenarios. While such issues are rare, it is important to consider the possibility when handling ALTA Temperature Sensors.

Monnit's Calibration Handling Procedures

When receiving and shipping sensors for calibration procedures and repairs, Monnit applies a yellow cover to the sensor probes. We do this to avoid contact with the probe, thus limiting exposure. Additionally, we direct all calibration services providers to use extra care in handling these probes and cables.
