Do I need an Unlock Code?

Monnit Gateways utilize a data interface called the Default Interface in order to deliver data to the iMonnit Online Portal by default. This interface utilizes the protocol Monnit developed for reliable secure transmission of sensor data to the Monnit platforms. This is a proprietary interface by which encrypted data is transmitted and interpreted by the following Monnit platforms:

While the default configuration delivers data from the Monnit gateway to iMonnit Online, it is possible to Unlock your gateway to direct the gateway/sensor traffic to one of the locally-hosted Monnit platforms (Enterprise/Express/MINE). This will require the purchase of an Unlock Code.

When do I not need an Unlock Code

If the intention is to utilize your gateway with the iMonnit Online Portal over the Internet, you will not need an Unlock Code. This is how the majority of our customers operate.

  • If your intention is to utilize the MODBUS TCP Interface of the Ethernet Gateway or PoE Sensors while simultaneously maintaining a connection to iMonnit Online, an Unlock Code is not required.
  • If your intention is to utilize the SNMP Interface of the Ethernet Gateway or PoE Sensors while simultaneously maintaining a connection to iMonnit Online, an Unlock Code is not required.
  • If your objective is to configure network settings (such as applying a static IP address to an Ethernet Gateway or PoE Sensor), you can do this through the device's local HTTP Interface, and an Unlock Code is not required.
  • Monnit cellular gateways offer the ability to be used with supported cellular carriers. As it relates to cellular carrier subscriptions, Monnit cellular gateways are not locked. They are only Locked to iMonnit software. Therefore an Unlock Code is not used or required as it relates to operating cellular gateways with your own SIM cards.

When is an Unlock Code required

Note: the PoE Sensors also offer MODBUS TCP and SNMP Interfaces, however, they do not offer the ability to be used without iMonnit Online.

Unlocking WSAs

When Unlocking the USB WSA (Wireless Sensor Adapter) Gateways, the Unlock Code is saved directly to the host PC. This means that the Unlock status is not associated with the gateway itself, but with the PC hosting the gateway. If the gateway is moved to a different host PC, you will need to contact support@monnit.com to request the gateway be sent the Unlock Code status. The WSA must be communicating with iMonnit Online while this Unlock status is sent to the gateway. In other words to Unlock a WSA Gateway, the host PC must be able to reach the iMonnit.com site (sensorsgateway.com) over outbound TCP port 3000 in order to receive the Unlock Code.
